I'm just wondering how some of you choose to reward your birds, either for good behavior in training or just in general. I found Castor will try almost anything food wise, but he much prefers personal attention or new cage toys especially.

I've been lucky enough to have birds that were tame or mostly tame when I got them so I usually give treats because they need them and seem to like them. most of my birds have been crazy about lettuce, corn and bread, so those were always good treats. The budgies especially appreciated a toy with a bell on it and some personal attention.

Attention seems to work for most animals, doesn't it?
Do you find that food or attention works better with your birds or are they about equal?

Yup. including humans. :)
I'm not sure what you mean by "works better." They seem to like food and attention equally. I'm not sure I can separate them really, because when I'm giving them a treat they have my attention.

I would have to agree with that. One of my birds loved to have me hand-feed him his everyday normal food, while the others really didn’t care about it that much but much rather received new treats. It seems like the personality of the bird dictates what s/he prefers when it comes to attention over food and toys.

I used to hand-feed my birds some fruit whenever I wanted to reward them I didn't do much training with them, so rewards were for special occasions or for when they came willingly to me and sat on my hand or shoulders.

I would reward mine when they decided not to put up a fuss when it was time to get back inside the cage but instead flew in voluntarily or at least within a few minutes.:)

Before I lost Pollux, I would have said that Castor responded better to food rewards. Now that he's had a chance to bond with me, he responds much better to the attention he receives.
