okay folks this is my first attempt to add a photo to my thread hope it all works if so loads to follow.Basically i've been working on my garage coversion for about 7 weeks now it is part of the house with a door leading directly off it into our kitchen and above it we have a bedroom. My garden is to small so this was the only choice. This has advantages and disadvantages as all birdrooms do. the main advantage is i'm immune to outside weather changes so thats got to be a big help.
Main disadvantage no windows so will relly totally on artificial daylight bulbs so only time will tell with breeding results. More words and pics to follow if this works.

it worked? great now i can give a little more info. The garage is 16 x 8 so i'm putting in one long flight which is 16 x 3 and several stock cages for youngsters i have lined the roof partitioned off the garage doors or sealed them:p and as the other end opens into my kitchen i've put ventilation out through the doors as you can see by the ducting in the ceiling. This consists of two extractor fans and one fan sucking clean air in. I just hope the wife can stand the noise from the birds all day long:D otherwise i'm gonna be in trouble? there will be a glass door fitted between kitcen and birdroom wich will be kept closed most of the time due to bird dust noise etc i am quite advanced now ,the main flight is finished and i'm just building my main blocks of breeding cages 20 cages in all.I'm not rushing to get birds in until at least aug/sep as i want it all perfect and ready.Any questions please ask and i'll add photo's as time goes on. all the best and thanks for such an informative website and my inspiration to start this wonderful hobby all over again.

Youve been busy mate, this is gonna be a cracking bird room. Nice one
That sounds good - your own little retreat in the garage to relax and tend to your birds - and as you say - you are not at the mercy of the weather and it may be more secure and easier to keep the vermin out than in a wooden shed! Keep us updated with your progress - it looks good so far.

some more pictures showing 4 stock cages at the other end, these have dividers so can be made bigger going to use them for youngsters till they go through there first moult to help settle them down.I plan on putting another large single stock cage below these which will be 4ft by3ft by 18inch going to start that tomorrow! oh i do love bank holidays the extra time it gives to do these things. Also you can see the start of the breeding cages theres 2 banks of 8 here planning on 20 cages in total each one is 15in high by 12in deep by 24in long i would have liked them 15 in wide but by the time i hang on the outside nest boxes its going to be tight for walking around in there anyway. They all have dividers and are made of contiboard so no painting to do!! i hate painting:rolleyes:thanks

Hi Rob no mate no birds at the moment i have kept Exhibition Budgies twice before though once as a teenager and then again in my late twenties but you know how it is getting married money etc, well thats all settled now i,m now 41 and my youngest child is 9 so i have a bit more time on my hands now. Not sure where i'm going to buy birds from first but i want to stick to just 2 maybe 3 breeders and not mix them and just see how things go, cheers.

Hello Daz,thanks for the comments believe me i took ages trying to convince my misses? so i brought her a dog as a sweetner? I think any garage is a perfect solution most people only use them for storage nowadays anyway i'll keep pictures coming and hopefully she will say yes?:D

Hmm dog aye,
might work for me that one, i want to put a 30' x 12' birdroom up and can see a bribe needed to get it past my other half:D

If only it was the cost of a dog, she keeps pestering me to extend the house over the garage for a extra bedroom with on suite bathroom, then i can have the garage as my birdroom, no idea about prices for extentions, but £200-300 for a dog seems a good deal. A £30,000 birdroom is a little over the top.

A few more pics just tiling the flight floor as we speak been a pain as the concrete floor wasn't quite level even putting leveling compound down first:( still nearly done. All thats left then is a new door to be fitted on the kitchen side, this i want some glass in so we can watch the birds from the kitchen but keeping the door closed. This will keep the dust down in the house and the noise:eek: Then i need cage fronts and make some nest boxes thats about it then?? enjoy!

thanks for enlarging the pics shaun your a true gent! Rob yes that is laminate floor i was going to tile but to much work with leveling the floor,i'm having enough problems tiling the main aviary still once done i'll be able to sweep all shavings up in one go and chuck a bucket of water on the floor to disinfect;)in fact come to think of it as its tiled all round the walls sides etc i could have my own swimming pool in there and watch the birds flying over my head? just have to dive under the water everytime they drop there bombs from above  thanks again for the kind comments

Really is looking great Stormin. What is at the end of the flight near the kitchen? Have you had to box something in there? Just asking as we may have a water drainage problem in a similar position and thinking storage underneath??
stormin
18-05-2009, 05:52 PM
Hello titchpritch well spotted, well your right its a storage area for seed etc as i haven't any space any where else in there still its a 3 foot square hole so should be good, already i've made a seed bin on wheels to keep under there as i continued the laminate floor into that cupboard space to make things easy to clean.

You lucky So n So. What I wouldn't do for a Garage sized Aviary! I would give my left arm for that sort of a set up! Your Mrs. must be very understanding! Do you think she could give my wife a few pointers? I only have to think about an extension and she says NO! Im sure she's a Witch! Seriously, you are very lucky!
