Hi,
I bought two budgies last wednesday. They both are under one year, one cock Grey (Neal)/one hen Blue (Nikki). I bought a pair of birds (Yellow, Green) today, can not tell the sex as they are very young. I should have read some of the topics before and quarentined my new birds for few days but even then I could not have helped it and kept them in diff cages as I have only one cage.
My hen Nikki (Blue) has got little bit messy vent (poo area). She keeps on picking it up as well with her beak. Is it something serious??? She seems be active, chirpy and eating well. All others seem to be OK.
I change their water everyday, clean the tray (take it out and wash). Today I gave both Neal and nikki a good bath and kept them out with cage for 5 mins. I bought a disinfectant as well today and cleaned the tray again just now as it was bit messy again.
Both Neal & Nikki have got the tip of their beaks changing colour as well, but I read in one of the topics (Lisa MummyL) saying that it is normal as they seem to be rubbing it on perches.
I'm sort of new in all this..so please advise guys .... I would hate my birds getting sick...like everybody else.
Thanks .... Amit

I know you are supposed to quarantine birds for 3-4 weeks-but I never have done usually a few days so I can treat for mites, make sure they look ok-no diseases yet either-but I have space you do not.And I think that as long as the poo that is stuck to your birds vent(usually stuck to the feathers around it)looks normal-you know solid not runny and none of the birds have diaorrhea-you should be ok-just keep an eye on them, you've already bathed them -if your worried about the tray at the bottom getting too messy(of the cage) cover with white paper/newspaper/sand sheets-whichever you prefer-that way you can clean the worst mess off it daily. As I said before my birds are forever rubbing beaks on perches so try not to worry-do try to enjoy your new babies.

Hi Lisa...
Really appreciate your helpful advise. I took Nikki out (my blue hen) took her to the basin and checked her vent ... washed it ... it seems like cos she is light blue in color poo colors her feathers so i was worried ...
one of them is doing runny poo ... but i read somewhere it might be stress as they are new ... i kinda know it is one of my new young ones ... cos when i got her in the box from the pet shop she did in the box and it was runny ... so i will keep an eye and if it continues what shall i do? shall i get some mix from vet or shop and feed her separately...
your help and advise will be really appreciated ...
thanks again ...
Amit

It could be due to the stress of a new home-I've just read an aticle on budgie disesases and it suggests cold tea?-I dont know why. Also read somewhere about bioserine or aureomycin you can get from vets or pet shops. If I was you I'd leave her a few days see if it clears up and take it from there. My birds get runny poo if they eat too many green foodstuff-because of the water content, maybe a change of her normal diet. She may just need to settle and get used to everything.Keep us posted.Any one else got any ideas?

It is indeed. Its great to see the power of internet put to better use :). i did have a pair of parrots but that was way back when I was 12-13 and that too in India.
I love birds and really appreciate forums and members like these who take time out of their normal lives to help other people out.
It instills confidence in you that if needed someone is there to help you out with their advise.
One day when I'll have my birds for long enough may be I'll learn from experience and helps others out who need it...
Thanks ... Amit
