My budgies have both had problems. The first one had a ring on his leg from the petshop and it grew in to his leg and the vet had to cut it out. My current budgie, his beak grew too long and was damaging his chest and needed it trimmed.

Have your budgies ever had problems?

I lost one of my boys to an upper respiratory infection. It was all kinds of horrible. He was fine one day, and the next he was just all puffed up and not active at all. I took him to the vet right off, but we lost him after about three days at the vet. My other one has always been healthy (knock on wood) and has only ever needed the occasional nail trim.

One of my females was egg bound once. She wasn't in any pain or discomfort and the vet said to just leave it be and let it re-absorb. It took a while but she was soon back to normal and lived a long life.

Tigriz, that sounds kind of like what may have happened to one of mine. She was old, around 10 years, and one day was puffed up and really still, I watched her for a few days but she sadly died. I don't think the vet could've done anything to help her.

In the wild it's in a bird's best interests not to look or act sick or injured because predators would notice. By the time a bird shows symptoms, he's probably been sick for a little while. All you can do is trust your instincts, based on what you know about the animal. It's possible there really wasn't anything the vet could have done.

Nini, I often wonder if the added stress of being at the vet and in an unfamiliar place may have contributed to my losing him. I guess I'll never know. He needed care, and that was my first instinct.

my budgie billy is still having the runs, he is drinking and eating ok, i have kept him off his millet in case it was that.

i'm concerned, he cost me about £10, if i take him to a vet it will cost me more money than buying a new budgie, i cannot afford it, if i ring a vet he will want me to come and be charged. his no 2s are green instead of black and white. any suggestions.:(

Ahhh ... Spicky. This thread is from 2006 Louise revived it by mistake.

Hello louisellen, Welcome, I think you will get better response here to your problems if you go to the main subject on health, & on the top right hand corner of the threads will be a START NEW THREAD Click on that & Make a title & start a new thread. You will get more help that way.
