My family thinks I've gone bird crazy. My friends don't really say much either way. They just listen and nod their heads and act semi-interested.

Having a pair incubate and hatch eggs can be pretty rewarding and a proud moment, seeing them grow up slowly in your own setup.

Personally I think most human babies are ugly but again I was biased when my son was born! so it's just natural I guess. :D

My friends father breeds and gave me 8 males when I got my aviary so most of my friends are pretty interested in it.

Hi - fortunately my 'best' friend has aviaries - albeit it full of finches, diamond doves, fancy chickens etc, so she understands. She is completely crazy about Barn Owls - she puts boxes up for them and checks their progress throughout the year. She has also had rescued Barn Owls over the years - she has two long term ones. The male hates me because he sees me as 'opposition' unfortunately, but the female is fairly friendly although I keep away from talons and beak....

Don't worry about the comments as soon they'll change their tune when they see the chicks develop with all their beautiful feathers. How are the young ones doing? How many are there? Well done for successfully breeding them.

It IS great - going round there is always a pleasure because you can hear the birds long before you get to the garden. The only thing I DON'T like is having to feed the barn owls dead chicks - I sometimes take care of the 'livestock', as she calls it, when my friend is away. I HATE picking up the 'defrosted' chicks up and putting them into the Barn Owl aviaries. My friend is country born and bred and thinks nothing of it....... Still, has to be done.

Oh and she used to have about 100 mice - those I loved. Particularly the babies - so sweet, so tiny. My daughter used to 'foster' some of them at our house (when she was young.)

yup it has to be done because i college we have bat eared foxes and we have to feed them dead chicks and the other exotics eat pinkies and adult mice.

mice are lovely and really intelligant i had to but i had to return them as they stunk the house out because my dad told me 2 take em back didnt want to though :(

That's great the two chicks are doing so well. All down to your TLC no doubt. I'm so pleased for you. I do wonder about something though how do the parent bird/birds react when one handles the babies? I'm interested because when I manage to start breeding I would like to know what to expect - do the right thing.

most people see budgies as a pass time for old people ie an old guy walking down the garden with his slippers and hand rolled fag to see to his birds(always with a vest on and braces holding up his trousers) or the old couple with a budgie called "charlie or berty"
i grew up with budgies(my grandad had an aviery with budgies and yes he did wear braces and wore a vest)and so did my dad for a while (he didnt wear a vest or braces)i just started as a way of spending more time with my kids and less time down the pub(i have never worn braces........but i have a vest when i was small...........it was a superman one.....it was cool when i was 6.....i wonder where it is know? hmmm.
