Thread: Mirrors?

  1. Mirrors?

I have a small mirror in my budgie's cage and he keeps spitting up on it. Do you think this is a problem?

  2. no i dont c it being a problem my male (marlin) used to do dat

  3. I've always heard that mirrors can drive Budgies crazy??? Maybe it's true and that's why he is spitting at it.

  4. I don't think it's driving him crazy, but I think he's in love with it. He talks to it all day saying "hello pretty bird"

In a way, yes. Regurgitating seed is the budgie way of saying "I love you" or "I care about you." Adult birds regurgitate seed to feed babies and courting birds feed their mates. Your bird thinks what he sees in the mirror is another bird and he's charming it.

you put mirrors in a budgies cage if you only have one budgie then it thinks theres another one in there with it so its less lonely its cute watching them talk to it

  7. Thanks for the replies. It's nice to know that he's not sick, just crazy in love with a mirror.

Even when I've had several budgies all living together I put a mirror in the cage. Some were interested, some weren't. I think it's just another facet of that charming budgie personality.

Mirrors are great for solitary birds as its like company for them, but they are not needed when you have two or more birds also if you are teaching your budgie to talk then a mirror is not needed. Each bird is different though.
